What do you charge?

Essex farm lets survey · opening soon

We're about to ask farms across Essex what they charge for the buildings they let. Here is exactly what the survey will ask, and why. It isn't open yet: email us and we'll tell you when it is.

The buildings we'll ask about

One page, about five minutes

One answer per building, or per kind of building if several let at the same rate. You never name a building or a tenant.

Drawn by our own barn engine. Drag one to turn it.

  • Modern steel shed
  • Older steel or concrete shed
  • Traditional brick or timber barn
  • Dutch barn (open sided)
  • Workshop or office conversion
  • Yard or hardstanding
  • Storage containers
  • Portable office or cabin

What we'll ask

For each building

  • What you charge

In whichever units you use: per square foot a year, a month, or a year. We do the sums.

  • Roughly how big it is

In square feet. A rough figure is fine, and only needed if you charge by the month or year.

  • Insulated?

    Yes, partly, or no.

  • Toilet and water?

    Yes or no.

  • Three-phase power?

    Yes, no, or not sure.

  • Let, empty, or used by the farm

So a figure for an empty building is never mixed in with real rents.

  • Roughly when it was built

    Before 1950, 1950 to 1989, 1990 to 2009, 2010 or later, or not sure.

  • How high the eaves are

Where the walls meet the roof. Low means a lorry can't drive in; high means it can, with room for a mezzanine. The split is about 4.5 m (15 ft).

    • Low eaves
    • High eaves

Just the postcode

About your farm

Your farm's postcode places you among farms a similar distance from towns and motorway junctions. It's never shown. A name and email are only needed if you want your report sent to you.

Your answers will stay yours

Before it opens

  • Five farms or no figure

A number only appears when at least five farms are behind it.

  • No one farm can be the figure

No single farm can make up more than half of the buildings behind any number.

  • Never named

We never show or share one farm's rents.

  • The details, in full, before it opens

We'll publish exactly how answers are stored, who sees them and how to have them deleted before the survey collects anything.
